<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HU7f7BD9jEI/UNz8rPrfi9I/AAAAAAAACtQ/g18wLxYNhHI/s1600/Starbucks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HU7f7BD9jEI/UNz8rPrfi9I/AAAAAAAACtQ/g18wLxYNhHI/s320/Starbucks.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The last few weeks there has been an inspiring trend occurring at our local Starbucks drive thru. I don't know how it started but I'd heard about it - paying for the order of the car behind you. A friend of mine posted on Facebook about doing it a few weeks ago but I had no idea it had turned in to a bit of a phenomenon at our local Starbucks until last night I asked my husband to grab me a green tea latté on his way home from errands and the car in front of him paid for the drink.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I went back through the drive thru and after a car pulled in behind me, I noticed the military personnel sticker on the windshield (we have a VERY high active duty and retired military presence in our city), so I grabbed my chance and paid for both of their drinks. The Starbucks employee didn't even question it, he said it's been frequently happening!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Love it! I don't want to see this one end this season!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have you been a part of any random acts of kindness this season, either giving or receiving? I'd love to hear if this is going on at other Starbucks...</span>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7198403109060442.post-47292104939937619602012-12-13T13:01:00.000-08:002012-12-13T13:01:03.908-08:00Angry Birds Cupcakes - Easy to do!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CwSbnQugnNY/UMpAKjbTv4I/AAAAAAAACsU/4Q0jvb8FXtg/s1600/photo(68).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CwSbnQugnNY/UMpAKjbTv4I/AAAAAAAACsU/4Q0jvb8FXtg/s400/photo(68).JPG" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Do you ever have one of those times when your child comes to you all sweetly and innocently asking you to whip up a batch of something fabulous for a last minute school party? Yep, that was me earlier this week. My oldest is obsessed (might be a slight understatement) with Angry Birds and when he asked so nicely for me to make a bunch of Angry Birds cupcakes for his Leadership Class Holiday party, I knew I had to deliver the *gulp* 36 themed out cupcakes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I scoured Pinterest for ideas and wasn't really finding decorating ideas that looked right too me. I didn't want to do fondant decorations, but had no idea how to create a realistic cupcake that was easy to churn out a ton of. While talking out my ideas with a friend, I had a brilliant idea to use an ice cream scoop to scoop out the round shape of the birds and she added the idea of using yellow fondant to form the beaks. Seemed easy enough.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">They were SUPER simple to create (any baking novice could do the same because I am by no means a professional). My son's concern was that they look realistic and not be too artistic so the pressure was on to deliver.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zcq3wwX5wIw/UMpAW3XjKuI/AAAAAAAACsc/R8LRx6rdbpU/s1600/photo(69).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zcq3wwX5wIw/UMpAW3XjKuI/AAAAAAAACsc/R8LRx6rdbpU/s320/photo(69).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I used pre-made yellow fondant I had left over from a cake (fondant lasts a long time as long as you keep it tightly sealed) to form the beaks free hand. (my son helped) You can also purchase small packs of pre-colored fondant at most craft stores.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the birds has brown eye brows, so I used brown fondant I also had left over to form the tiny eye brows. I painted the other birds eye brows on with black gel food coloring (super inexpensive at Michael's).</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bupu5QLsYfY/UMpBKsBPxAI/AAAAAAAACs0/08hQcJG5MlI/s1600/photo(65).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bupu5QLsYfY/UMpBKsBPxAI/AAAAAAAACs0/08hQcJG5MlI/s320/photo(65).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I made my own butter cream icing, but honestly you could buy icing and color it to match whatever color you needed. I found the size ice cream scoop that fit on top of the cupcakes and carefully scooped 12 colors of each on to the cupcakes. I stuck each beak in the frosting scoop. I used pre- packaged white frosting to do circles for the eyes and then used black gel food coloring to make a black dot for the pupil in each eye. I also used the same black gel to free hand the eye brows on the remaining "birds".</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If I had more time I would have piped green icing around each bird to mimic the grassy areas, but I'm still thrilled with how they turned out!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By purchasing the professional cupcake boxes at a local cake supply store, these cupcakes were a huge hit and made me look like Super Mom in the eyes of my son.</span> Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7198403109060442.post-89172528572541876672012-10-21T22:40:00.001-07:002012-10-21T22:40:38.360-07:00Unjunking your candy with UNREAL chocolates!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mDKwpanjwFU/UITZ1Hpbw1I/AAAAAAAACrs/9X5LZlb08kQ/s1600/photo(61).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mDKwpanjwFU/UITZ1Hpbw1I/AAAAAAAACrs/9X5LZlb08kQ/s400/photo(61).JPG" width="300" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have a love/hate relationship with candy, one I've had all my life. I'm allergic to something frequently used to make chocolate but haven't been able to ever figure out what that is. Every time I eat chocolate I am playing Russian Roulette and don't know if it will be one that makes me break out in hives. One pattern I have noticed is the higher the quality - the less I seem to react.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When I first heard about UNREAL candy, I suspected this might be a match made in heaven for me. I'd seen them everywhere - CVS, Ralphs, Rite Aid, Michaels, Staples and a bunch of other stores but the skeptic in me prevented me from buying one. I started to hear murmurs from friends about how very different the chocolates tasted. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dvOFvcgn7-E/UITZ8H8gMaI/AAAAAAAACr0/DTsjWOjdSSE/s1600/photo(64).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dvOFvcgn7-E/UITZ8H8gMaI/AAAAAAAACr0/DTsjWOjdSSE/s320/photo(64).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The candy doesn't contain GMO's, artificial flavors, corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and synthetic colors like most candy bars. They are made with real milk, cane sugar, double cacao, more peanuts and organic palm oil. The bars contain about 30% less sugar than their counter parts, have 60% more fiber and actually contain protein! For me I LOVE the fact they contain protein (the chocolate caramel nougat bar has 5 grams of protein!). I've been working hard at building up my protein in my diet and knowing that there is REAL food in the bars helps remove the guilt with snacking on a candy bar! (All this for right about the same price as a traditional candy bar!)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c_DIJcMlgcs/UITaEMfXfcI/AAAAAAAACr8/9ZnG2ilcQv8/s1600/photo(62).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c_DIJcMlgcs/UITaEMfXfcI/AAAAAAAACr8/9ZnG2ilcQv8/s320/photo(62).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When I had the chance to throw a party to introduce the UNREAL bars to a bunch of friends I was excited but nervous since I hadn't tried them myself. After my first bite I was hooked! The candy tastes so different than regular candy, but different in an wholesome, delicious way! And the best part in my opinion? I don't have an allergic reaction to them!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The kids all had a great time running around getting to sample lots of their favorite candy, but unjunked! I heard several of the kids commenting that the natural food colors sure make the candy taste better!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I took a poll among everyone there and the peanut butter cups were a definite winner, but the candy coated chocolates were also loved. This is one more tool for parents to use in removing the junk from our children's diets!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I might be the house passing them out at Halloween along with a flyer for parents to read... </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have you taken the taste test yet? Do you prefer the taste of junk in your candy? Or do you prefer your candy unjunked?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: xx-small;"><em>Note: This is part of a compensated campaign, but all of the opinions expressed are 100% my own and I absolutely LOVE the UNREAL candy after trying it! I honestly am thinking pretty seriously about buying a bunch and handing it out to trick or treaters!</em></span>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7198403109060442.post-66476085830538891352012-10-17T21:20:00.000-07:002012-10-17T21:20:12.615-07:00We Bite Stupid ~ Semi- Wordless Wednesday<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last weekend we ventured out to the Oceanside Pier. The kids had a great time and we thoroughly enjoyed eating at the Ruby's Diner at the end of the over 1,000 foot pier.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On the way back we came upon this fantastic sign and the pelican sitting right next to it. <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yfthubiR8rg/UH4y0HVXapI/AAAAAAAACq8/PqNm0LFP8K4/s1600/ABC+logo_revised.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="92" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yfthubiR8rg/UH4y0HVXapI/AAAAAAAACq8/PqNm0LFP8K4/s320/ABC+logo_revised.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As moms, taking care of everyone else seems to fall before taking care of ourselves. We often wait until it is <em>that</em> bad to do something about a health problem, simply because we didn't have the time to figure out where to start.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I can't even count the number of times I have paced in the kitchen late at night wondering if my son's cough, fever or weird rash was something that should wait until the doctor was in the next morning or if it was something that needed emergency attention. I can't even tell you how much I would have appreciated the ability to call a nurse in the middle of the night to diagnose the severity. Consoling an uncomfortable baby at home is much better than waiting for hours at the emergency room as long as you know its something that can wait!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The other day I had the chance to sit in on a conference call with Blue Cross Blue Shield (it operates under a number of WellPoint family companies, varying by state). It's one of the largest insurers in the country. I've never felt that our insurance company was truly a partner in health, but after hearing about how Blue Cross Blue Shield is working to help people maintain health, my opinion dramatically changed. Our insurance is Blue Cross and I honestly had no idea we had access to a 24/7 nurse, but the number is right there listed on my insurance card! Having the ability to pick up the phone and ask the advice of a nurse is priceless to me! It's not available for all health plans, but a huge number of plans include it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Blue Cross is also partnering with FitOrbit, which provides personalized personal training to assist people with meal plans, fitness goals and everything in between.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is also a Future Moms program that helps pregnant women at all stages including maternity care and postpartum care. There are ways to sign up through the Blue Cross website to add email reminders for health issues, patient record updates and countless other features.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The one thing I really came away with was being beyond impressed with how Blue Cross Blue Shield is shifting the focus to helping people maintain (or achieve) healthy lifestyles instead of waiting until an illness or other issue becomes so severe it can't be ignored. I encourage you to take a few minutes, check out your health insurance website and take advantage of the services being offered to you. If you have a 24/7 nurse line, make a mental note of it. If there are other plan specific programs being offered to you, use them. They are there for a reason, to keep you and your family healthy!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><em>Note: This is part of a compensated campaign with TheMotherhood, and is completely coincidental that I am a Blue Cross Blue Shield Subscriber. My opinions are as always completely my own and I can say I am now SUPER proud to be insured by them!</em></span>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7198403109060442.post-70551536127626833822012-10-14T11:29:00.001-07:002012-10-14T11:29:35.856-07:00Candy Corn Inspired Dessert - Halloween Fun!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Halloween is one of our favorite holidays. Unfortunately it's not one I have many family recipes to draw upon so I have gotten creative. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XmYFR4XWonE/UHsAGblHRHI/AAAAAAAACqc/DC8brlKGjKo/s1600/Snapseed(5).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XmYFR4XWonE/UHsAGblHRHI/AAAAAAAACqc/DC8brlKGjKo/s400/Snapseed(5).jpg" title="Jello and Selection at Smart & Final" width="300" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This year I went down to our local Smart & Final (I always love going here when I'm creating a new recipe!). The selection and sizes of cooking and baking items just can't be found at other stores.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HtD3647uF5w/UHr6zQB3Y0I/AAAAAAAACps/IN7BII-cYUk/s1600/Snapseed(6).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HtD3647uF5w/UHr6zQB3Y0I/AAAAAAAACps/IN7BII-cYUk/s400/Snapseed(6).jpg" title="First Street Candy Corn from Smart & Final" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Candy Corn is a favorite in our house so I got to work on creating a candy corn inspired dessert. Being super easy, quick, and easy to do on a mass scale - it's the perfect dessert for that Halloween Party!</span><br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BaFiDom5wwc/UHZN9kXX0dI/AAAAAAAACpU/DFTEwlhA0Q8/s1600/photo(56).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BaFiDom5wwc/UHZN9kXX0dI/AAAAAAAACpU/DFTEwlhA0Q8/s320/photo(56).JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been a fan of Dermalogica for my entire adult life! I have crazy sensitive skin and am very hesitant to many new things on my skin, but have found that there isn't one of their products I am allergic to. Unfortunately as I age, the sun damage from my younger years is catching up with me even though I am diligent about using sunscreen when in the sun now.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Recently Dermalogica released a new Multivitamin Power Serum. It enhances cell turnover, reduces hyperpigmentation and ensures a smoother surface appearance without the redness and irritation that many retinol products cause.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've had the chance to test it out for a few days (perfect timing considering the beating my complexion took last week on the Outdoor Ed camping trip!). I can honestly say my skin glows now and love love love the way it makes my skin feel!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So... best part? I have a tube to giveaway! Enter to win using the Rafflecopter entry form below. Goodluck! I'll pick a winner on October 30th at 11:59 pm Pacific time.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last week I saw a side to my son that couldn't make me more proud. It was one of those moments as a mom when you cry tears of joy, the realization that your child has something so deep inside of them that you helped them create. That moment when you *almost* feel like saying "my job here is done, if they have learned this one thing, there is very little more important..."</span><br />
<br />
Last week I was a parent chaperone on my oldest son's Outdoor Ed trip to the mountains. We stayed several days and I can honestly say those were some of the most exhausting days I've ever had, but I wouldn't change them for the world.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My son is a wonderful, compassionate and smart young boy. He's not my athletic child, but he is my book worm. So when we caught our first glimpse of the giant Alpine Tower the kids would have the chance to climb, I have to admit, I was worried and didn't want to put the expectation on my son that he get to the top. Each child was asked by the counselors (or naturalists as they are referred to) what their goal was, that it didn't matter if their goal was to go up a few steps or go to the top - it was whatever their own goal was.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My son clearly stated his goal when his turn was up. "I'm going to the top" he said with confidence that worried me. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I knew how daunting the tower was and didn't want him to feel defeated if he couldn't make it to the top, to me it didn't matter how high he went up. Just trying was enough to make this mom proud.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As he began his climb, I talked to one of the teachers asking advice because it looked like I would have the chance to try my hand at the tower (along with other chaperones) after the kids finished. I didn't want to try on the same side as my son, in case I was able to go higher. I didn't want him to feel I had beaten him at something. I considered giving up a level or two below where ever he decided to quit. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ozllUahHT9s/UHJfinS0v4I/AAAAAAAACoE/p-Pfo6aa2AE/s1600/IMG_2362.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ozllUahHT9s/UHJfinS0v4I/AAAAAAAACoE/p-Pfo6aa2AE/s320/IMG_2362.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Up he went, slow and steady until a tricky spot (that even the naturalists commented was super tricky to navigate), he struggled and struggled for 10 minutes to get past this one spot. I was a nervous wreck worried that if he quit (which I would have totally understood) that he would feel defeated. But he carried on, painstakingly trying again and again until he got up to the 3/4 way platform, minus a shoe and dripping in sweat. He kept going, I know his muscles were aching. He worked his way up to the rope ladder and slowly worked his way up it. After almost 30 minutes total he had made it to the top. Many kids had quit at varying stages, some had scurried up faster, but none had worked as long as he had and pushed through with such determination to get to the top.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I cried like a baby. I couldn't be more proud of his sheer determination to do something so out of his comfort zone.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was up a few after him and I knew that I too had to get to the top of the tower. If he didn't quit, neither could I. Was it easy, absolutely not, but I powered through it knowing he was anxiously watching from below.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B8RZD_pPdB4/UHJemsmt0tI/AAAAAAAACn8/e8U24a3SFkQ/s1600/IMG_3863.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B8RZD_pPdB4/UHJemsmt0tI/AAAAAAAACn8/e8U24a3SFkQ/s320/IMG_3863.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Later that afternoon I had the chance to pull my son aside and ask him if he thought about quitting, he said "Absolutely not!"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I asked him why he didn't even think about quitting and without skipping a beat he said "There was a little voice in my head that kept saying over and over - Don't quit! It was annoying sometimes, but I listened anyway because I knew it was right. So I just didn't quit." </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With that I knew I had managed to instill a trait so powerful in my son, one that if he learns nothing else from me I'll be ok with it. Perseverance. He can and will do anything he puts his mind too, no matter how much of a challenge.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm enlarging and printing a photo of him being lowered down from the top of the tower and if he ever tells me he can't do something, I'll point to the picture and say "If you want to, you will".</span>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7198403109060442.post-23648241397270929262012-10-04T06:30:00.000-07:002012-10-04T06:30:04.913-07:00Little Things Remind You of the Big Picture<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xfO5T8cR5BA/UGp6Xg5IHsI/AAAAAAAACmw/-eiWk7AV5ZE/s1600/photo(54).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xfO5T8cR5BA/UGp6Xg5IHsI/AAAAAAAACmw/-eiWk7AV5ZE/s320/photo(54).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sometimes it takes a little thing to remind you of the bigger picture. Last week I found this note in my son's room while he was at school. It was a crazy, busy day full of rushing here and there to get things done while the boys are at school. I was grabbing something in his room when I saw this note out of the corner of my eye, typos aside, it stopped me in my tracks. Seeing his reminder to clean up his room after he finished his homework made me remember my most important job is being Mom and raising wonderful, responsible children is a gift to be cherished.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sometimes we need the little reminders as to why we do what we do. I'd love to hear any of your "reminders"!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">At about the time you are reading this I will be up in the mountains far from technology (that means no hair dryer, no email, no wifi and no texting!). I'm chaperoning my son's 5th grade class as they go on their Outdoor Ed camping trip. I'm a tad bit worried about what I've gotten myself in to... but we can be sure it will be an experience to remember.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've already jokingly alerted people that if I revert to my Native American heritage and resort to sending smoke signals from the mountains (that we can see in the distance from our house) - 1 long, 2 short means send decent food, 2 long one short means send Starbucks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I hope I have stock piled enough sanity for the next three days, kidding, kinda. But at least we are staying in cabins, not tents as my wise friend pointed out. We are still using sleeping bags and bringing our own pillows. The chaperones are bringing our own cars to haul the luggage, so I *might* have a hidden stash of protein bars in my car...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm excited to be going, it will definitely be a fun adventure... but I am totally dreading the mountain of email I know I will be coming home to!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Make sure you enter all three giveaways I have up while I'm gone... and keep an eye out because I'll have a Dermalogica giveaway next week. Have a great week everyone!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My life has been forever changed by Cancer - 14 years ago I lost my Mom to Cancer. She happened to have Lung Cancer, not Breast Cancer, but one thing that brought to the center of my mind is the importance of screening for all Cancers. My mother's lung cancer had one of the worst survival rates of all Cancers - at her diagnosis we were basically looking at months not years of potential survival and this was if she made it through the initial weekend. Early diagnosis in most cases for Breast Cancer dramatically increases chances of beating the disease. Early diagnosis can mean a 98.6% chance of survival past 5 years. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm so excited that Mimi's Cafe is partnering with the National Breast Cancer Foundation this month to bring in donations for such a a great cause! Stop in anytime this month to donate $1 (and up) and Mimi's Cafe will give you coupons valuing over $30 for the restaurants over 125 locations. Also be sure to try out the two new Sparking Pink drinks - Sparkling Pink Passion Mimosa and Pink Passion Sparkler. A portion of all proceeds will also be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.</span><br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GW_Q4mdxzKg/UGkYXm0ie3I/AAAAAAAAClg/h0lrrX_s8Do/s1600/IMG_2233.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GW_Q4mdxzKg/UGkYXm0ie3I/AAAAAAAAClg/h0lrrX_s8Do/s400/IMG_2233.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last Friday we had the chance to check out opening night of Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland and it was so much fun! Each year Disneyland adds additional features to the event that really make it a unique experience for all different types of people. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dbTOSPtQ5a8/UGkZ1oWPqxI/AAAAAAAACl4/Gd0r--jdVmA/s1600/photo(52).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dbTOSPtQ5a8/UGkZ1oWPqxI/AAAAAAAACl4/Gd0r--jdVmA/s320/photo(52).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This year I really noticed a large number of dance parties with great music that had you wanting to get out there and dance with the characters! One fun one we happened by was Pirate palooza located at the outside eating area of Rancho del Zocalo. We saw Pluto rocking out dancing with toddlers and adults, it was somewhere I could have stayed all night!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g40wlsycSPU/UGkX7l0UV9I/AAAAAAAAClQ/865Y6chEYjI/s1600/photo(51).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g40wlsycSPU/UGkX7l0UV9I/AAAAAAAAClQ/865Y6chEYjI/s320/photo(51).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There were many other dance parties and so much to catch during Mickey's Halloween Party, I think it is impossible to catch all of it! With Ghost Galaxy (Halloween overlay at Space Mountain), Haunted Mansion Holiday (Nightmare Before Christmas), Halloween Screams firework display and more treat stations than you will have time to catch (but you don't have to go to many before your bags will be full of great candy!).</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Hl9bHUT6L7s/UGkY9BNvz0I/AAAAAAAAClw/Me26lGElk10/s1600/IMG_2251.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Hl9bHUT6L7s/UGkY9BNvz0I/AAAAAAAAClw/Me26lGElk10/s320/IMG_2251.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of my favorite additions (not sure if it is new or just the first time I saw it!) was the light show set to music on the Castle, my favorite was the skeletons dancing up the side of the castle, but the Heffalumps dancing around were very neat too!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AwCI5c0VOsc/UGkYD9CtfyI/AAAAAAAAClY/9OZuGKzCloM/s1600/photo(50).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AwCI5c0VOsc/UGkYD9CtfyI/AAAAAAAAClY/9OZuGKzCloM/s320/photo(50).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Mickey's Halloween Party is the place to be for Halloween fun! Want to go? I've got two tickets to the Mickey's Halloween Party on October 9th to giveaway to a reader! It gains you entry to Disneyland at 3pm and until the event ends at 11pm!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of my favorite recent additions to the Mickey's Halloween Party has been the healthy treat options at the trick or treat stations. In past years we had come home with A TON of candy and it was fantastic to be able to have my children alternate healthy carrot sticks, apple slices, raisins, craisins and other healthy snacks between candy snacking!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gkoJkOVHiCg/TpnV5kfJPZI/AAAAAAAABGQ/_6j3mvEv-hU/s1600/IMG_0274.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gkoJkOVHiCg/TpnV5kfJPZI/AAAAAAAABGQ/_6j3mvEv-hU/s320/IMG_0274.JPG" width="213" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Couple of tips: Initially I was intimidated by the length of the lines at the first candy stations we found. But what I quickly realized was that was apparently the first station everyone went to. So if you see that line... just skip it and move on to the next! Another HUGE trick we figured out is there are two lines going in opposite directions for each station (think cars on a two lane road), so if you see a long line on one side, check the opposite direction and I bet you'll see little to no line, so flip around and come at the candy station from the other way. This is a particularly useful tip for the treat trails. Everyone ends up in the same line... so by going in the opposite direction... let's just say you save a TON of time and can get more rides in! </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Mickey's Halloween Party requires a special event ticket (even if you are a passholder), but allows you access to the park for up to three hours in advance of the event beginning. <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nnggXzDfrxk/UF_tjtVSPHI/AAAAAAAACkQ/VtZytRCP6RM/s1600/photo(47).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nnggXzDfrxk/UF_tjtVSPHI/AAAAAAAACkQ/VtZytRCP6RM/s320/photo(47).JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Watching a space Shuttle take off or land has been on my life bucket list for as long as I can remember. Living here in California has made that a much harder box to check as complete, so when it was announced a few years ago that the space shuttle program was coming to an end I quietly moved that bucket list item to the section of wish I could have or maybe one day if they start the program back up again.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then it was announced that the Space Shuttle Endeavour would be making it's final journey here to Southern California and making its home at the California Science Center. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As a family we made a pact to go see it as soon as it arrived. We were floored when it was announced that the shuttle would be piggy backed on a 747 and would make special fly-overs of California landmarks on its way to land at LAX. Disneyland being one of the landmarks that it would fly-over sealed the deal and off we went to catch a glimpse. The above picture is what I took that day looking up as it passed over us.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I admit it, I was teary eyed and beyond excited to be one of the millions who looked skyward last Friday to welcome Endeavour to its home on its final flight.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We can't wait to catch it on display at the California Science Center at the end of October!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Did you snap a great picture that day, either on its journey through Northern California or Southern California? I'd love you to post it on the </span><a href="http://www.facebook.com/ocmomactivities" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">OCMomActivities fanpage on Facebook</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">!</span><br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KkmizWVQNHc/UFgEEIqdPoI/AAAAAAAACj8/O4i1ZWZHY2k/s1600/Snapseed(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KkmizWVQNHc/UFgEEIqdPoI/AAAAAAAACj8/O4i1ZWZHY2k/s320/Snapseed(2).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I can rest assured that life will never be boring being a mom to two energetic, smart and adventurous boys. This last weekend proved it, because apparently it needed reinforcing.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My husband and I were peacefully sleeping in and were awoken to the sounds of something mechanical zooming around our room. Once we were coherent enough we realized my son had sent in his remote controlled spy camera car and had it doing 360's around our room.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My poor half awake husband stumbled out of bed, picked it up, set it outside our bedroom door, shut the door as he mumbled to knock it off and proceeded to go back to sleep. We both laughed later at how funny it actually was ... after we had our coffee of course!</span><br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_CQE50pBYQA/UFf_PE2QB-I/AAAAAAAACjo/_f7hzYHHpoM/s1600/photo(46).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_CQE50pBYQA/UFf_PE2QB-I/AAAAAAAACjo/_f7hzYHHpoM/s320/photo(46).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was warned, but wasn't prepared that it would occur practically overnight one random day.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I went from buying one gallon of milk a week to needing at least two in what seemed like a blink of an eye. It all became clear last week when I went to pour a glass of milk for one of the boys as they were getting ready for bed, it was Tuesday. I had grocery shopped on Sunday. There was maybe about a cup of milk left in the carton. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So I called a family meeting. It was quick and easy, "Don't touch that last cup of milk so I can have my mocha in the morning because I don't think anyone wants me to miss my coffee. As soon as I drop you guys off at school I will replenish it, but that last cup is mine!" </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Note: Both boys had several large cups of milk earlier that day, including homemade chocolate milk. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When I next looked in the refrigerator the sign stating "Reserved for Mom" had appeared on the carton. My kids crack me up!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I think I got my point across. Honestly I'm a little worried for the next increase in volume of milk drinking so I'm eyeing dairy cows (on the advice of my neighbor), but I'm not sure it is allowed per the CC&R's for our neighborhood...</span>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7198403109060442.post-67648599725489947422012-09-14T12:06:00.000-07:002012-09-14T12:06:06.848-07:00Fresh&Easy $1 Bottle Big Kahuna Wine Sale? Don't mind if I do...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm a HUGE fan of Fresh&Easy and have been since they opened here in Southern California. I have done a large percentage of my grocery shopping there ever since!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I wanted to be sure you heard about the absolutely fantastic wine sale they are having today through Sunday on their Big Kahuna wine label, if you haven't tried them yet, they are great great wines at prices that you won't believe (here in So Cal, we pay $1.97/bottle!). With all your favorite varieties like Shiraz, Cabernet, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Merlot and other blends, you are sure to find a great one and can't go wrong. <em> </em>I always keep a few bottles on hand as everyday wine and no one believes me when I tell them the price!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, the exciting part? At all Fresh&Easy locations the Big Kahuna wines are on sale for ($1/bottle at the Southern California stores)!!! Yes, stock up time!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And yes, the above picture was indeed taken today, but isn't my trunk (it's my friend's trunk!), but that's not saying I won't be doing the same later this weekend! The stores are ready and have tons of cases ready for you!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've mentioned it many times before, but seriously, how much can a person love their house? The last few mornings we have been waking up to this behind our fences... sheep!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The neighboring farm (which is the next phase development for new homes) is still being farmed and they use sheep to eat back the plants in the field that aren't caught up in the hay baler. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_JlpK7pow0c/UFFuhRRqzCI/AAAAAAAACi4/D0l5L4wDfYo/s1600/IMG_2218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_JlpK7pow0c/UFFuhRRqzCI/AAAAAAAACi4/D0l5L4wDfYo/s400/IMG_2218.JPG" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I seriously felt like braiding my hair and romping through the fields channeling Heidi as I listened to the bells of the sheep and watched the sheep dogs gracefully keep their flock in check. For the record I didn't yodel, but the thought did cross my mind...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What fun!</span>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7198403109060442.post-25054122788766844132012-09-11T17:27:00.003-07:002012-09-11T17:41:04.567-07:00What's your internet connection called? It says a lot about you!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hUF1U4R2WPM/UE_WTUabAAI/AAAAAAAACiU/LybQgNcRKhM/s1600/IMG_3654.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hUF1U4R2WPM/UE_WTUabAAI/AAAAAAAACiU/LybQgNcRKhM/s320/IMG_3654.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We're a little geeky around our house (my husband is in IT, so it's expected). We like to have fun naming our portal to the internet (aka our WiFi). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When we first moved in to our neighborhood, the cable guy didn't give us a choice in naming our connection and we always meant to change it but never got around to it. Recently a new company with a fancy fiber connection moved in to the neighborhood and everyone on the street has been switching like crazy (including us!). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We knew this was our time to seize the moment and come up with something unique, other than our last name as the name. My husband chimed in of course and decided he wanted it called <strong><em>Oswald</em></strong>. Yeah... he's a big Disney fan too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My neighbor switched to the fancy new service too and asked me for ideas. Immediately I decided <strong><em>Nemo</em></strong> would be a good name (they are a very tropical crew and even complete with a fish tattoo to match being Disney lovers). How perfect I explained that they could ask their house guests "If they had found <strong><em>Nemo</em></strong>...". They have that sense of humor. And the fate of their WiFi connection name was set.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Come to find out the technician said that people come up with all sorts of crazy names for their connections, one of his favorites being <strong><em>Nacho Connection</em></strong> - this one is just so dang funny on so many levels, say it out loud if you aren't getting at least two reasons! Another hilarious one was Child Pornography, well, because who would be stupid enough to break in to that and steal connection?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Another hilarious one I've seen floating around the internet is to name it <strong><em>FBI Surveillance Van</em></strong>. It's enough to scare you're neighbors, right?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A fun one would be to name it <strong><em>Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious</em></strong>, because seriously who would ever be able to spell it correctly enough? (yes, I looked it up)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><em>Go ahead, make my day</em></strong>. <strong><em> Pedophile. I'm watching you</em></strong>. <strong><em>Dark side</em></strong>. All mention worthy in my book.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now I asked a poll of my friends and sure enough most are pretty boring, naming them after pets, ahem - you know who you are. Given a few minutes of creativity, what would you name your connection? Because well, we can all use a good laugh when we can get it, right?</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Kids are back to school and it's time to get back in to the lunch groove! I used to find packing school lunches to be a challenge. I've had to get creative over the years because until recently Kyle (my youngest) hasn't been interested in having sandwiches in his lunch and Brett (my oldest) has never been a fan of sandwiches. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Packing healthy, nutritious lunches has taken a lot of creative thinking on my part, but I finally feel like I've gotten the hang of it. Ok... so the boys coming home frequently saying the other kids were jealous of their yummy lunches was also a big clue I was on the right path!
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of my favorite "tricks" for their lunches is to pack left overs from dinner the night before. For example tonight I made chicken breasts in the slow cooker, with rice and salad on the side. The boys LOVED the dinner, so I have these fantastic split dish containers that I portioned out some of the left over rice. Add a mandarin orange, granola bar and yogurt cup and the kids have a super easy, nutritious and filling lunch that you can be proud of! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To save time I portion out the containers as we are cleaning up from dinner so it saves me tons of time when I'm getting their lunches packed up.
The widespread use of re-usable lunch totes has made it easier than ever to send kids with containers that you know won't be thrown away. I make use of those to the fullest! I've sent the kids with taco leftovers, spaghetti left overs, slider hamburgers (made at home so I know what is in them!), bruschetta and more.

I'll share some of our favorite packed lunches over the next few weeks and would love to hear (and feature!) some of your lunches (email me OCMomActivities at gmail dot com).</span> Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7198403109060442.post-16845206686226736382012-09-04T21:15:00.000-07:002012-09-04T21:15:03.856-07:00Feeling like the luckiest Mom on the planet!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last week was my Birthday and one of my sons (age 8) decided he was going to make me breakfast in bed. It was a school day, so I humored him and was sure it would get lost in the shuffle.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sure enough the morning of my Birthday, I heard rustling by my bed side every few minutes starting at abut 6 am and the constant turning on of my cell phone to check the time. I pretended to sleep. At about 10 minutes before my alarm was to go off, I was gently nudged awake by my son followed with "Happy Birthday Mom!"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sitting on my nightstand was a cup of peppermint hot chocolate (in a specially picked mug he explained he found at the back of the cupboard), bowl of cereal, bowl of ice cream and a beautiful card.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My heart melted to see how hard he had been working on making my morning special all on his own.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Someone is celebrating a Birthday this week - <em>me!</em> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had to share this picture of the gorgeous Tiramisu cake that my neighbor made for me, I'm so touched she would create such a work of art for me! Tiramisu is one of my most favorite desserts, so a whole Tiramisu cake is just pure deliciousness to me!</span>Katiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17164218203912658693noreply@blogger.com1
